1 > Rosehill Roundabout
The Rosehill Roundabout is a large oblong shaped 5 arm signalised roundabout connecting 5 major roads. The speed limit on all approaches is 30 mph. The signal heads are located on every arm of the roundabout. In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 6 accidents at and within the vicinity of this junction. There were no common causes, however all the accidents are related to traffic negotiating the junction. Two of the accidents involved serious injuries and the remaining 4 resulted in only slight injuries. On site observations show that the signals can be confusing to the average motorist, leading to hesitation and accidents. While the majority of the accidents are not actually on the roundabout, conflicts at the junction can have an effect on upstream traffic causing accidents.
On site observations indicate that the signals are positioned too high and a large proportion of cars makes driving on this Roundabout confusing, for example when a driver tries to leave at a particular exit and has to cross three lanes first it would cause stress and lead to driver error.

2 > Mulgrave Road/ Brighton Road
This junction is a standard priority controlled junction with a pedestrian crossing to the north of the junction on Brighton Road. Mulgrave Road is the minor arm and approaches Brighton Road at an angle. The speed Limit at this junction is 30 mph.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 5
accidents at and within the vicinity of this junction. Two of the accidents involved vehicles failing to give way at the junction, 1 involved a vehicle changing lanes and the third was a pedestrian crossing the road in the wet and being struck by a motorcycle. It appears the pedestrian crossed while the signal was not in his favour. All the accidents at this junction involved only slight injuries.
On site observations show that the road condition is poor and the visibility is limited by buildings.

3 > Lind Road/Carshalton Road/Alfred Road
This junction is a staggered priority controlled junction on the A232 Carshalton Road. The speed limit at the junction is 30mph.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 4 accidents at this site. Three of the four accidents involved vehicles failing to give way at the Lind Road arm of the junction. All of the accidents involved only slight injuries. The 4th accident involved a cyclist in the middle of the carriageway being hit by a motorcycle.
On site observations show that Lind Road is used as a ‘Rat-Run’ and has a high concentration of turning vehicles at this junction. The visibility at this location is restricted by buildings and a bend in the road towards Carshalton.

4 > Grosvenor Road / Manor Road / Melbourne Road / Belmont Road
This problem site has 2 staggered priority controlled junctions in close proximity to each other. The site is just north of Wallington Station and there is a dip in the road as the road passes under the bridge, causing poor forward visibility. The speed limit on this road is 30 mph.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 5 accidents at this site. Three of the accidents involved vehicles failing to give way at the junctions, 2 involved rear shunts and one involved a motorcycle overtaking a right turning vehicle. All the accidents at this junction involved only slight injuries except one involving serious injuries. It appears that the problems at this site are caused by poor forward visibility for northbound traffic coupled with the traffic, when slow moving, being overtaken by motorcycles.
On site observations show that the visibility is limited through parked cars on the pavement, buildings and the road layout. Manor Road passes under the bridge, drivers on the Belmont Road, Melbourne Road or Grosvenor Road will not see traffic on Manor Road till the last minute.

5 > Stanley Park Road / Woodcote Road / Stafford Road
This is a large signalised junction with pedestrian facilities on all arms except the southern arm on Woodcote Road. The speed limit at this junction is 30 mph. There is a multi storey car park to the north east of the junction, accessed from Stafford Road.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 4 accidents at this site. Three of the 4 accidents involved vehicles turning right into the path of a motorcycle and the 4th accident was a vehicle disobeying the traffic signals and also turned right across the path of a motorcycle.
It appears from the data that there may be a visibility issue for right turning car drivers seeing oncoming motorcycles.
On site observations do not indicate any obvious causes of accidents andthat this may be purely driver error.

6 > Stafford Road / Blenheim Gardens
This junction is a standard ‘T’ junction with priority control. There is a bus stop to the east of the junction on the north side of the road. There is no right turn lane for traffic turning off Stafford Road into Blenheim Gardens. The speed limit at this junction is 30 mph.
In the last 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 5 accidents. There were no common causes, however all the accidents are related to traffic negotiating the junction. Two of the four accidents involved serious injuries.
On site observations indicate that the problem may be caused by a high number of vehicles using the lower class roads at peak times, however the flows are not high enough to suggest it is used as a rat run. The visibility at this site is limited, especially at the petrol station for both traffic exiting and passing the petrol station and the road surfacing is of poor quality. One of the reasons visibility is poor is as a result of parked cars.

7 > Carshalton High Street / Rotherfield Road / Acre Lane
This junction is a staggered priority controlled junction with a pedestrian crossing to the west of the junction. There is a public house to the north of the junction and a motorcycle shop to the south of the junction (Lamda Motorcycles). The speed limit at this junction is 30 mph.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 7 accidents at this site. The majority of the accidents involve vehicles emerging from the side roads, either turning right, failing to give way or motorcycles braking to avoid an accident. All the accidents at this junctioninvolved only slight injuries except one involving serious injuries.
The problems at this site appear to stem from the concentration ofmotorcycles arriving from different directions to visit the motorcycle shop.
There is no motorcycle parking provided and motorcyclists are concentratingon where to park. Some of the accident data was too vague to establish the cause of the accidents, for example, ‘vehicle braked to avoid an accident’.

8 > Plough Lane / Croydon Road / Broadway
This junction is a priority controlled staggered junction by ‘The Plough Inn’. The speed limit at this junction is 30 mph. The right turn movement from ‘The Broadway’ is prohibited and enforced by way of directional traffic islands. There is a service road to the north of the junction serving a number of residential dwellings. There is a bus lay-by to the north of the junction between the service road and Croydon Road.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 4 accidents at and within the vicinity of this junction. Two of the 4 accidents involved conflict between mopeds and cyclists, 1 involved a right turning manoeuvre and other resulted from a lane change manoeuvre. All of the accidents involved only slight injuries.
On site observations show an island in the middle of the Croydon Road and poor road condition. The road at the island is like a chicane and too narrow for a car and an overtaking motorcycle.

9 > Lavender Road/ Senhouse Road
This junction is a staggered priority controlled junction with built out kerbs on the eastern side of the junction to allow for parking bays. The speed limit at this junction is 30 mph.
In the 3 years between 1st Nov 2000 and 31st October 2003 there were 4 accidents at this site. There were 2 accidents at the Lavender Road Arm which both involved right turning vehicles. The two accidents at the Senhouse Road arm involved a U-turning vehicle and an overtaking vehicle hitting a turning motorcycle.
On site observations suggest that a ‘rat-run’ exists on Senhouse Road as several cars drove in and out. There is traffic calming at the beginning of Senhouse Road and Lavender Avenue.
